Macabre Monday #52 – Skull Tower in Niš

When visiting Niš, something that I was very interested in seeing was the Skull Tower.

The Skull Tower in Niš is a cement tower, with human skulls embedded in the sides. During a battle between the Turkish and Serbs in 1809, the Turkish won, and constructed the tower which originally contained about 952 Serbian skulls.

In 1892, the a chapel was constructed around the tower and it was declared a monument of cultural importance. The chapel has since been renovated, and a glass cabinet was constructed around the remains of the tower. Only 54 skulls remain, after families retrieved some skulls to bury, and others stole them.

While sad and harrowing, the tower is important to Serbian people. It shows their resistance and futility over the years, and the sacrifice that their ancestors made for their freedom.
