Macabre Monday #39 – Top 5 Movies to watch this Halloween Week

posted in: Macabre Monday | 4

Halloween Week, you heard me. One day just isn’t enough for me, so I like to make a bit of a week out of feeling spooky (who am I kidding, this is pretty much year round for me). I thought I would share my favourite movies to watch during Halloween week. This are classics and I really can’t go an October without watching these five flicks.

HocusPocus

Hocus Pocus (1993)

This one is pretty much a given. I’ve watched this every October for the last…I don’t even know how many years! It’s the ultimate Halloween movie, and great for kids to watch. I think watching this movie as a kid helped me grow into a horror-loving adult. Also, if you happen to be a fan of Sarah Jessica Parker, she has the cutest role in this film (she has always been my most favourite Sanderson Sister!!!).

Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

This also has to be watched during the Christmas Season, obviously. Written by Tim Burton, whom is utterly brilliant in almost everything else he is involved in, is pretty much king of kid-friendly creepy. It totally gets me in the mood for Halloween, whilst reminding me of upcoming festive season ahead. Win win.

Halloween (1978)

Definitely a must-see during the Halloween season! One of the original slasher movies, Michael Meyers, a mentally unstable patient escapes from the asylum and wreaks havoc on horny teens. Think of this as one of the pioneers in slasher films, the basic formula mostly stemmed from this film (as well as a couple of others released around the same time). Jamie-Lee Curtis as babysitter Laurie is the perfect heroine.

Beetlejuice (1988)

A couple of recently deceased ghosts contract the services of a โ€œbio-exorcistโ€ in order to remove the obnoxious new owners of their house. This is one of my favourite films from childhood, and I loved Winona Ryder in this film. “I too, am strange and unusual.” As an adult, I love the clever and funny witticisms, as well as the hilarious idea of how the afterlife is for ghosts. I sure hope we get a Handbook for the Recently Deceased on our departure!

House of 1000 Corpses (2003)

I had to put at least a semi-actually-scary one in here (The Halloween film is probably too campy to be actually scary). I only watched House of 1000 Corpses this year (I hear all you horror aficionados gasping!) but don’t worry, I loved it! Captain Spalding has since haunted my nightmares and I kind of have a weird crush on Otis Driftwood.
